Under the Sonata Hybrid's Hood

Hyundai offers a single powertrain for its hybrid models, a 2.0-liter engine mated to an electric motor. Together, they develop a peak output of 193 horsepower. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission and energy stored from regenerative braking is stored in a trunk-mounted lithium-ion battery pack. Compared to the battery used in Camry Hybrid, the Sonata Hybrid uses a polymer gel as the electrolyte in its battery. This allows for a thinner and lighter casing, which translates to more cargo and interior volume. The Sonata Hybrid features a  2.0L 4-cylinder engine that runs on regular gasoline and offers Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) for smooth acceleration and efficient cruising resulting in improved fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 44 Highway MPG.

Design of Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

All 2016 Hyundai Sonata models get a 7-inch touch-screen audio system with HD Radio, Bluetooth and USB smartphone integration, and Hyundai's Blue Link telecommunications suite. While the previous-generation Sonata had the styling turned up to 11, the current one has dialed it back to a more easy-listening 7. Brilliant design and a more compact battery that fits in the trunk give the Sonata Hybrid the most passenger and cargo volume in the Midsize Hybrid Sedan class. That's more room than the Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion hybrids. And that space-saving lithium polymer battery comes with a lifetime warranty from Hyundai. The hands-free smart trunk opens automatically when it senses the Proximity Key is behind the vehicle within three feet for more than three seconds.

What is the Sonata Plug in Hybrid?

The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid drives very similar to the Sonata Hybrid, with the added benefit of a dedicated, all-electric range up to 24 miles due to a more powerful electric motor and larger battery pack. The larger battery system can be charged by plugging in the vehicle to a regular 120V power outlet or dedicated 240V charging station.

What type of transmission does the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid use?

Sonata Plug-in Hybrid uses a six-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai's Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED) architecture, a 50 kW electric motor, in place of a torque converter.
